French is spoken .

all over the world.

With more than 320 million French speakers, our language is the 5th most spoken in the world according to data from the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF, 2025). It therefore follows English and Spanish, as well as Mandarin and Hindi, which are both spoken in very populous countries.

French is present all around the world. Would you like us to take a tour together? Let’s go.

In French, the word “speaker” refers to a person who speaks a language. So who are the French-speaking speakers, spread across almost all continents?

Africa, the driving force of the Francophonie.

  • 60% of French speakers live in Africa (DR Congo, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Cameroon, etc.).
  • Population growth is strong, and by 2050, the OIF estimates that 85% of French speakers will be African.
  • French is the 2nd language of economic exchange in sub-Saharan Africa (World Bank, 2025).

Asia and the Middle East:   a growing French presence.

  • Lebanon, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos: colonial heritage and a language of education among elites.
  • China, India, South Korea: French is the 2nd most studied foreign language after English (growth of +15% since 2020).

Europe and North America: a dynamic French language.

  • France, Belgium, Switzerland, Canada: French remains a key language in education, culture, and politics. France also has departments and territories located in Oceania and Latin America…
  • Canada (Quebec, New Brunswick): 7.5 million French speakers, with a language law (Bill 101) that strengthens its use.
  • United States: 2.1 million speakers, increasing thanks to African and Haitian communities.

French in major diplomatic fields.

French is the official language of 32 countries. It is also one of the official and working languages of major organizations such as the UN, the European Union, NATO, and the International Olympic Committee.

France and Canada use French as a tool of influence, for example by creating Francophonie summits.

Culture and creativity.

French is the 2nd most translated language after English (UNESCO).
In literature, our language is wonderfully represented by world-famous authors, both past and present. Sixteen French authors have received the Nobel Prize in Literature.

In cinema, French dominates international festivals such as the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.

Let’s end with gastronomy and tourism: France remains the world’s number one tourist destination, with strong cultural influence from Paris to the French Riviera, including Mont Blanc and Mont Saint-Michel.

And as everyone knows, its regional dishes, wines and cheeses, and extremely diverse culinary traditions make France the cradle of gastronomy, and they certainly make it easier to “loosen up” and feel comfortable speaking French.

Economy and business: doing business in French.

All over the world, certain economic sectors make extensive use of the French language, especially where France is widely recognized. This is the case in luxury and fashion, beverages and gastronomy, but also in the tech and startup world (Station F in Paris, African hubs such as Dakar or Abidjan). French is the 3rd most used language in artificial intelligence projects in Europe, after English and German.

French is the second business language in Africa, after English (African Development Bank).

In the field of energy and the environment, France has major companies, and it also strongly influenced the success of COP21 on climate change in Paris in 2015.
