What is the best way to learn french?

The best way to learn French is to be immersed in it.
Spending one year in a french speaking country is perfect. If you do not have this amount of free time, you can still live in a french speaking country for a few months, you will learn a lot. In this case, the best is to study before in your own country so that when you arrive you do not loose time learning the basics.

Once you are in a french speaking country, you need of course to enroll in a french foreign language school ( take an intensive class if you can't stay for a long time). Also, try to participate to all cultural activities that are offered to you. Meeting french native speakers and speaking is very helpful, but difficult as first because native speakers do not speak as slowly as your teachers!
Also, living with a french host family is 100% better than in a student residence where you will probably be with other foreigners : you will then communicate either in english or in your mother tongue.

French language and DELF/DALF

The French Ministry of National Education awards two diplomas, the DELF and the DALF. These exams take place both in France and abroad. For details contact your nearest French consulate.

Diplôme d’Etudes de Langue Française (D.E.L.F.) is divided into two levels:
Level I - containing four units (A1 to A4)
Level II - containing two units (A5 to A6)
Units can be taken individually in any order, and once passed a credit is given which remains valid indefinitely. Each unit costs approx. 46 €. The Level II DELF is only open to candidates who have passed Level I. Candidates who obtain the DELF level I should be able to understand and make themselves understood in a wide variety of everyday situations in a French-speaking environment. Candidates with the DELF level II will be able to operate in a more specialised area of interest (eg. economics or another academic domain).

Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française (D.A.L.F.) The DALF is made up of four units (B1 to B4). As with the DELF, credit units are permanently valid. Candidates are expected to demonstrate their ability to use French in both general and specialist contexts. However, whilst candidates are expected to engage in a fairly technical discussion of their chosen field, the test is one of language and not of specialist knowledge. In order to sit the DALF exams, candidates must have a level II DELF or (in the U.K.) a pass at French GCE ‘A’ level. (For other recognised awards, contact your local consulate.) It is also possible to take a DALF access test. Candidates who pass the DALF are deemed to be exempt from the language requirement for entry to French universities and to be able to follow a course in their chosen field.

Inflexyon, french language school prepares for both diplomas, DELF and DALF. For more information, contact us : Inflexyon.

Foreign students in france : study french and share our traditions!

Last week-end, French people celebrated the holiday of Epiphany (January 6th) the day when the 3 Kings visited the Baby Jesus. As part of French tradition, a bean or small china feve (favor) is hidden in the cake. The person who finds the feve in his or her slice becomes king or queen for the day. The person can also choose someone to be their king or queen and can lead the traditional dance.
Next week on tuesday, during french classes, Inflexyon will have its own celebration and students will be able to taste the "galette des Rois" while learning new french vocabulary.

Foreign students in france : you are welcome!

Over the last few years, the French authorities have improved how they welcome foreign students.

Here are some possibilities to get grants :

Like French students, foreign students have access to the Fonds de Solidarité Universitaire (FSU) (University Solidarity Funds): contact the social workers of the CROUS.

Technical and scientific research grants are reserved for French students or students from the European Union. However, an exemption is possible for foreign students that have completed their post-graduate studies in France. Candidates must be presented by the professors of the post-graduate cycle. Contact Ministère de la Recherche, Bourses M.E.S.R. - Bureau des Allocations de Recherche (Ministry of Research, M.E.S.R. Grants - Research Allocation Office).

Students holding a registration card of the Office Français de Protection des Réfugiés et des Apatrides (OFPRA) (French Agency for Protection of Refugees and Apatrides), less than 26 years old, with limited family resources, can also request a grant if they continue undergraduate and graduate studies. These grants are allocated according to family status criteria. It is necessary to contact the social registration service of the CROUS.

Grants from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs : social status has no influence in the awarding of this Grant from the French Government. Only university results count. Therefore, the results obtained at examinations and the opinions of professors are of prime importance for the renewal of this grant. The conditions to satisfy to be selected depend on the level of the degree you are preparing. The grant must be requested from the cultural and scientific advisors of the embassies or at the French Consulate of your country. Formalities must be completed one year in advance for the initial registration.

Of course, before going to french university you need to study french! Inflexyon can prepare you well with its french courses all year round and help you to choose university and with the whole admission process. Do not hesitate to enroll to our french classes!

DAP (admission test for french university)

If you want to register for the premier cycle or first stage of undergraduate studies in France and you do not have the DALF (Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française, or advanced diploma in French language), you must take the specific TCF (Test de Connaissance du Français, or French competency test) called the "TCF pour la DAP" or TCF for DAP (Demande d’Admission Préalable, or preliminary admission application).

TCF for DAP examination sessions for applicants to the premier cycle, or first stage of university studies, and to schools of architecture for the 2007 academic year open in October 2006 and close on 26 February 2007. The closing date cannot be extended.

Please note: The dates of TCF for DAP examination sessions vary in each country. Some countries only hold one TCF for DAP examination session (generally in January or February), while others organise a number of sessions (e.g. Algeria, Lebanon, Morocco, Tunisia, Vietnam).

It is up to you to find out the dates of the examination session(s) to be held in your country, as soon as possible.

Please note: If you do not find out the relevant information or do not take the examinations soon enough, you will not be able to take the TCF for DAP.

If you are not in France, you must contact the SCAC (Services de Coopération et d’Action Culturelle, or department for cooperation and cultural affairs) of the French embassy in your country. Once you have registered, you will take your TCF for DAP at the institution indicated by the French embassy (Institut Français, Alliance Française, Centre Culturel Français, university, etc.).

If you are in France, you will take your TCF for DAP at the university or school of architecture to which you are applying. These universities and schools will hold TCF for DAP examination sessions between 16 and 26 February 2007 only. After this date, you will not be able to take the TCF for DAP for the 2007/2008 academic year.

Christmas vacation in France

No french courses at inflexyon, french language school in france (lyon) during christmas vacation!
No classes to let our students discover french traditions for christmas : On the 24th, french children put their shoes in front of the fireplace, in the hopes that Papa Noël will fill them with gifts, candy, fruit, nuts.
Although fewer and fewer French attend la Messe de Minuit on Christmas Eve, it is still an important part of Christmas for many families. It is followed by a huge feast, called le Réveillon (from the verb réveiller, to wake up or revive). Le Réveillon is a symbolic awakening to the meaning of Christ's birth and is the culinary high point of the season. Each region in France has its own traditional Christmas menu, with dishes like turkey, capon, goose, chicken etc.
Another important aspect of French Christmas celebrations with the christmas tree is the "crèche" filled with santons, which is displayed in churches and many homes.

Our office will be open though, so if you have any question or if you want to enroll for french courses in 2007 contact us at : inflexyon
