This museum is a tribute to the architect and one of Lyon’s major town planner Tony Garnier (1869-1948). Tony Garnier studied arts at the technical school of la Martinière and at the Fine Arts school in Lyon. With the arrival of the famous mayor Hedouard Herriot at Lyon’s city hall, the architect was given important architectural pieces of work especially in the east part of the city coming across big transformations at that period. His main accomplishments are:

- The Hall Tony Garnier (1909-1928) originally used as a butchery hall but we now know as the major function room for concerts, exhibitions, showrooms. - The Edouard Herriot Hospital (1910-1933) - The Gerland Stadium (1914-1926) - The district of the “Etats unis” where the Tony Garnier museum is settled - The city hall of Boulogne-Billancourt.

The architect was always running after an ideal cultural city. His key words were functionalism, space, light and green spaces. His architectural utopia was sometimes not well perceived and worth him some criticism like the abusive use of concrete material and glass.

The museum presents 25 painted walls in the district, a replica of an apartment of the 1930s and an area dedicated to temporary exhibitions. This place wants to make us experience the cultural and popular ideas Tony Garnier established and defended. A wonderful tribute to the city planner who created a unique architectural style with his own ideas.

Guided tours are organized each Saturdays and as the Biennale of Contemporary Art has settled in Lyon for several months, a special exhibition is presented at the museum from 15/ 11- 19/12 called “Résurrection” from Veduta.
