The Beaujolais region is located in the North of Lyon. It starts from the North part of the Rhône Department, down to the Department of the Saône et Loire. Villefranche-sur-Saône is the largest town and the capital of the Beaujolais Region. The Beaujolais is also a wine region, which is very well known for its typical wines. The lands are 55 kilometres long from North to South, between Macon and Lyon, and stretches from the border of the Massif Central on the West part to the plains of the Saône on the East part. Vine stocks are cultivated on the hills, not on the plains, to get the best luminosity, exposure and the best quality soils. Around 40,000 pickers gather to harvest before the arriving of fall, when grapes are enough ripped. Grapes are still mainly hand picked in this region. Wines from the Beaujolais are produced with a unique grape variety called Gamay. Twelve Appellations compose the wines of the Beaujolais of which ten valuable ones, some Beaujolais Appellations and the Beaujolais -Village Appellations. The biggest and internationally known event of the region takes place during the Beaujolais Nouveau celebration, which occurs every third Thursday of November.
