Grand start from Monaco and the traditional arrival in Paris. From Saturday July 4 until Sunday July 26, the 96th edition of the Tour de France will count 21 stages and cover a total distance of 3,500 kilometres.

These stages are composed of:

- 10 flat stages - 7 mountain-stages - 1 medium mountain-stage - 2 individual time-trial stages - 1 team time-trial stages

This sport event created in 1903 is also the occasion to honour the cities, the countryside, and the mountains since 1947. Welcoming the Tour de France offers spotlight to the towns during 24 hours as they receive the whole crew of the Tour de France, which represents around 4,500 people but also many supporters. It is a great moment to organise a big party in the town. In 2008, 252 cities and towns were candidate for receiving the Tour during a stage.

In a period of globalization, the Tour has opened itself up to foreign countries. Since 1947, it extended to 9 foreign countries and 78 TV channels broadcast the Tour de France in 170 countries, which makes it a very popular event abroad.
